Handicaps

The Homestead Men's Golf Club Handicap Committee is responsible for ensuring compliance with the obligations under the World Handicap System in accordance with the Rules of Handicapping and the USGA. The Handicap Committee is tasked with providing playing conditions in which all participants have an equal opportunity to compete and win in any event they play. Members are encouraged to familiarize yourself with the Rules of Handicapping at this link: https://www.usga.org/handicapping/roh/rules-of-handicapping.html.

The proper posting of scores is essential to maintain a competitive balance in all HMGC events.

The following rules will apply to all HMGC handicap members for all rounds of golf played, which include both tournaments and casual play. Under the USGA Rules of Handicapping, the HMGC Handicap Committee reserves the right to modify a player’s handicap index, delete scores, or post “penalty” scores if it is determined a player has failed to post scores accurately and in accordance with the posting guidelines.

Player Responsibilities:

Post all acceptable scores, including casual, match play and 18 and 9-hole rounds.
Each player will try to make the best score at every hole in every round, regardless of where the round is played.
Timely Posting - all acceptable scores are to be posted immediately following the round and no later than within the same day. Scores not posted within 48 hours are in violation of posting procedures and subject the player to penalty or handicap adjustment.
Posting scores accurately and applying any Net Double Bogey adjustments as need to each hole of the round.
Any hole played where the ball is not holed out should be scored by using the Most Likely Score requirements.

The HMGC Handicap Committee strongly recommends using the hole-by-hole posting option within the GHIN system. Using the GHIN hole-by-hole posting option automatically adjusts the score of each hole to appropriately account for net double bogey.

Net Double Bogey is calculated as follows:

Par of the hole + Double Bogey (2) + player handicap strokes for hole
For example: Assume that a player with a course handicap of 15 scores a 9 on the 13th handicapped hole, which is a par 4. Net Double Bogey is calculated as:
- Par (4) + Double Bogey (2) + Handicap for Hole (1) = 7
- The maximum score for that hole that can be posted is a 7.

If you make a mistake and post an inaccurate score, please contact a member of the handicap committee as soon as possible and they will be able to correct it for you in the GHIN system.

Submission of Scores:

All rounds during the active season (in Colorado: March 15 – Nov 14) that are considered acceptable for handicap purposes must be posted. Also please post your scores if you are playing in a state that uses year round posting for the USGA (e.g., Arizona, Southern Nevada). In general, these are rounds where you have played your own ball. Acceptable scores include nine and 18 hole casual rounds and match play.

Tournament Scores – Acceptable scores from HMGC tournament events will be posted by the HMGC Handicap Committee. Please DO NOT post your scores from HMGC Tournament events. The HMGC Handicap Committee will decide which scores in club tournaments are to be posted as competitive scores.

Match Play: Scores for HMGC match play competition rounds must be posted by the individual players and are not to be posted as a competition score.

What is an acceptable score to post?

Rounds played within the Colorado active posting season (March 15 – Nov 14th.)
Rounds played out of state during their active posting season. Arizona, for example, is active year-round for posting purposes.
Scores from all courses with valid USGA course and slope ratings.
Scores in all forms of competition where players play their own ball, such as match play, stroke play and team competitions (with the exception of HMGC tournament events which are posted by the committee).
Scores played under a local rule of preferred lies.
When a player is disqualified from a competition, but still has an acceptable score for handicap purposes (e.g. failure to sign a score card).
If 14 or more holes are played in an 18-hole round, post as an 18-hole round using USGA guidelines for holes not played. Or if 7 holes are played in a 9-hole round.
